उत्तराखंड में चमोली जनपद की सबसे सुंदर और प्राकृतिक रूप से संपन्न उर्गम घाटी में काफी संख्या में जंगली हिरनों की मौत की खबर आ रही है। यहां जगह-जगह दुर्लभ प्रजाति के हिरनों के शव जंगल में मृत पड़े हैं। वहां के स्थानीय प्रतिनिधि लक्ष्मण नेगी के अनुसार किसी अज्ञात बीमारी से हिरणों की मौत हो रही है, इस बाबत वन अधिकारियों को सूचित किया जा चुका है, यह इलाका नंदा देवी बायोस्फीयर रिजर्व से लगा हुआ है एक तरह से यह बफर जोन ही है। उर्गम घाटी के जंगलों में इस जंगली पशु को हिरन, घुरड़ या घ्वीड़ कहा जाता है, इनका किसी बिमारी से मरने के चलते पर्यावरण के जानकारों और स्थानीय जनप्रतिनिधियों के माथे पर चिंता की लकीरें खिंच गई हैं। पहले समझा जा रहा था कि यह हिरण बाघ या गुलदार के शिकार हो सकते हैं, लेकिन बहुत से हिरन ऐसे पाए गए जिन पर कोई खरोंच तक नहीं, इसलिए यह गहन शोध का विषय है। पद्मश्री चंडी प्रसाद भट्ट ने इस मामले पर चिंता व्यक्त करते हुए उम्मीद जताई है कि यदि ऐसा हुआ है तो वन विभाग के अधिकारी इसका यथाशीघ्र संज्ञान लेंगे। विभागीय अधिकारियों ने ऐसी किसी जानकारी से मना किया फिर भी किसी बीमारी की आशंका से इंकार नहीं कर रहे हैं, उनका कहना है कि यदि घुरड़ मर रहे हैं तो असली तत्थ्य तो पोस्टमार्टम रिपोर्ट आने के बाद ही पता लग सकेगा ।

In the forests of the Urgam valley, this wild animal, called a deer, ghurd or gheewid, has drawn worry lines on the foreheads of environmental experts and local public representatives due to their death from disease. It was previously understood that these deer may be prey to tigers or cauliflower, but many deer were found with no scratches on them, so it is a subject of intense research. Padmashree Chandi Prasad Bhatt expressed concern over the matter and hoped that the Forest Department officials would take notice of it as soon as possible. Departmental officials are also not ruling out the possibility of any disease, saying that the real facts will be known only after the post-mortem report.-Harish Makhuri
