उपरी तौर पर देखने से ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि सोलह संस्कार सभ्य समाज की स्थापना के लिए प्रत्येक व्यक्ति को सुसंस्कृत बनाने की पद्धति है। परन्तु वास्तव में आत्मा संस्कारित होती है और संस्कार सदैव साथ रहते हैं। इसीलिए सोलह संस्कार करने चाहिए। संस्कारवान व्यक्ति मरणोपरांत भी सूकर कूकर की योनि में नहीं पड़ता। बिना संस्कार के व्यक्ति को साक्षात् पशु पुच्छ विहीनं कहा गया है । संस्कार इस लोक में मंगलकारी और और परलोक में पाप हारी है। आत्मा शरीर छोड़ने के बाद कर्मों की भागी बनती है जिसे हम प्रारब्ध, कमाई या अपना पूर्व जन्मों का खाता कह सकते हैं। परन्तु जिस व्यक्ति के सोलह संस्कार हो जाते हैं और वह कर्मनाशा नदी में स्नान करने के बाद बदरीनाथ के दर्शन कर लेता है उसके संचित पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं और वह मात्र सुसंस्कृत प्राणी रह जाता है और बैकुंठ धाम का अधिकारी बन कर उसकी मुक्ति हो जाती है। जिस व्यक्ति के संस्कार नहीं होते वह 84 लाख भुक्ति जुग्क्ति योनियों के फेर में फंस जाता है और मनुष्य जैसी चेतन योनि में मिला अमूल्य अवसर भी सांसारिक भोगों में रह कर खो देता है।
