मृत्यु के बाद जीवात्मा यमलोक तक किस प्रकार जाती है, इसका विस्तृत वर्णन गरुड़ पुराण में है। गरुड़ पुराण में बताया गया है कि किस प्रकार मनुष्य के प्राण निकलते हैं और किस तरह वह पिंडदान प्राप्त कर प्रेत का रूप लेता है।
मृत्यु एक ऐसा सच है जिसे कोई भी झुठला नहीं सकता। हिंदू धर्म में मृत्यु के बाद स्वर्ग-नरक की मान्यता है। पुराणों के अनुसार जो मनुष्य अच्छे कर्म करता है, वह स्वर्ग जाता है,जबकि जो मनुष्य जीवन भर बुरे कामों में लगा रहता है, उसे यमदूत नरक में ले जाते हैं। सबसे पहले जीवात्मा को यमलोक लेजाया जाता है। वहां यमराज उसके पापों के आधार पर उसे सजा देते हैं।
गरुड़ पुराण के अनुसार जिस मनुष्य की मृत्यु होने वाली होती है, वह बोल नहीं पाता है। अंत समय में उसमें दिव्य दृष्टि उत्पन्न होती है और वह संपूर्ण संसार को एकरूप समझने लगता है। उसकी सभी इंद्रियां नष्ट हो जाती हैं। वह जड़ अवस्था में आ जाता है, यानी हिलने-डुलने में असमर्थ हो जाता है। इसके बाद उसके मुंह से झाग निकलने लगता है और लार टपकने लगती है। पापी पुरुष के प्राण नीचे के मार्ग यथा मल मूत्र मार्ग से निकलते हैं, जबकि पुण्य आत्माओं क्रमशः ब्रह्मरंध्र आंख या मुंह से प्राण निकलते हैं। मृत्यु के समय दो यमदूत आते हैं। वे बड़े भयानक, क्रोधयुक्त नेत्र वाले तथा पाशदंड धारण किए होते हैं। वे नग्न अवस्था में रहते हैं और दांतों से कट-कट की ध्वनि करते हैं। यमदूतों के कौए जैसे काले बाल होते हैं। उनका मुंह टेढ़ा-मेढ़ा होता है। नाखून ही उनके शस्त्र होते हैं। यमराज के इन दूतों को देखकर प्राणी भयभीत होकर मलमूत्र त्याग करने लग जाता है। उस समय शरीर से अंगूष्ठमात्र (अंगूठे के बराबर) जीव हा हा शब्द करता हुआ निकलता है। इसके बाद वह अंगूठे के बराबर शरीर यमदूतों से डरता और कांपता हुआ, कुत्तों के काटने से दु:खी अपने पापकर्मों को याद करते हुए चलता है। आग की तरह गर्म हवा तथा गर्म बालू पर वह जीव चल नहीं पाता है। वह भूख-प्यास से भी व्याकुल हो उठताहै। तब यमदूत उसकी पीठ पर चाबुक मारते हुए उसे आगे ले जाते हैं। वह जीव जगह-जगह गिरता है और बेहोश हो जाता है। इस प्रकार यमदूत उस पापी को अंधकारमय मार्ग से यमलोक ले जाते हैं।
गरुड़ पुराण के अनुसार यमलोक 99 हजार योजन (योजन वैदिक काल की लंबाई मापने की इकाई है। एक योजन बराबर होता है, चार कोस यानी 13-16 कि.मी) दूर है। वहां पापी जीव को दो- तीन मुहूर्त में ले जाते हैं। इसके बाद यमदूत उसे भयानक यातना देते हैं। यह याताना भोगने के बाद यमराज की आज्ञा से यमदूत आकाशमार्ग से पुन: उसे उसके घर छोड़ आते हैं।
घर में आकर वह जीवात्मा अपने शरीर में पुन: प्रवेश करने की इच्छा रखती है, लेकिन यमदूत के पाश से वह मुक्त नहीं हो पातीऔर भूख-प्यास के कारण रोती है। पुत्र आदि जो पिंड और अंत समयमें दान करते हैं, उससे भी प्राणी की तृप्ति नहीं होती, क्योंकि पापी पुरुषों को दान, श्रद्धांजलि द्वारा तृप्ति नहीं मिलती। इस प्रकार भूख-प्यास से बेचैन होकर वह जीव यमलोक जाता है।
जिस पापात्मा के पुत्र आदि पिंडदान नहीं देते हैं तो वे प्रेत रूप हो जाती हैं और लंबे समय तक निर्जन वन में दु:खी होकर घूमती रहती है। काफी समय बीतने के बाद भी कर्म को भोगना ही पड़ता है, क्योंकि प्राणी नरक यातना भोगे बिना मनुष्य शरीर नहीं प्राप्त होता। गरुड़ पुराण के अनुसार मनुष्य की मृत्यु के बाद 10 दिन तक पिंडदान अवश्य करना चाहिए। उस पिंडदान के प्रतिदिन चार भाग हो जाते हैं। उसमें दो भाग तो पंचमहाभूत देह को पुष्टि देने वाले होते हैं, तीसरा भाग यमदूत का होता है तथा चौथा भाग प्रेत खाता है। नवें दिन पिंडदान करने से प्रेत का शरीर बनता है। दसवें दिनपिंडदान देने से उस शरीर को चलने की शक्ति प्राप्त होती है।
गरुड़ पुराण के अनुसार शव को जलाने के बाद पिंड ही यमलोक के मार्ग में शुभ-अशुभ फल भोगता है। पहले दिन पिंडदान से मूर्धा (सिर), दूसरे दिन गर्दन और कंधे, तीसरे दिन से हृदय, चौथे दिन के पिंड से पीठ, पांचवें दिन से नाभि, छठे और सातवें दिन से कमर और नीचे का भाग, आठवें दिन से पैर, नवें और दसवें दिन से भूख-प्यास उत्पन्न होती है। यह पिंड शरीर को धारण कर भूख-प्यास से व्याकुल प्रेतरूप में ग्यारहवें और बारहवें दिन का भोजन करता है।
यमदूतों द्वारा तेरहवें दिन प्रेत को बंदर की तरह पकड़ लिया जाता है।

All his senses are destroyed. He comes in the root state, that is, he is unable to move. After this the foam starts to flow from the mouth and the saliva starts dripping. The life of the sinner goes down the way from the urinary tract, as well as the urinary tract, whereas the virtuous souls get life from the Brahmarandhra eye or mouth respectively. Two angels arrive at the time of death. They are held with great horror, angry eyes and lashes. They live in a nude state and make cuts and cuts from the teeth. Young people have black hair like a paw. Their mouth is crooked. Nails are their arms. Seeing these messengers of Yamraj, the creature becomes fearful and starts sacrificing excrement. At that time, the thumb on the body (equivalent to thumb) creates a ha ha ha. After this, the body was afraid of the thighs and trembling with the faces of the thongs, the dogs run away while remembering their sins. Like a fire, the creature can not walk on hot air and hot sand. He gets upset even with hunger and thirst. Then the Yamdut lashes on his back and takes him forward. The creature falls into place and becomes unconscious. Thus, the eunuch takes the sinner from the dark path to Yamakalok.
According to the Garuda Purana, Yalamok is about 99 thousand plan (plan to measure the length of Vedic period, a plan is equal, four kos (13-16 km) away. There they take the sinful creatures into two-three muhurats. After this, the eunuch gives him horrible torture. After receiving this notice, the Yamdoots return to the house from the skyway again by the order of Yamraj.
By coming into the house, the soul desires to re-enter its body, but she does not get free from the trap of the Messenger and weeps because of hunger and thirst. Son, etc. who donate in the end and in the end, does not satisfy the soul even because the sinners do not receive gratification by donation, tribute. Thus, the person becomes restless by hunger and thirst.
The son of a sinner who does not give birth, then he becomes a ghost and continues to be sad in the uninhabited forest for a long time. After much time has passed, karma is required to suffer, because the creature does not receive the human body without suffering torture. According to Garuda Purana, after the death of man, Pindada must be done for 10 days. That pindada becomes four parts per day. There are two parts in it, the five-fifth body is about to give confirmation, the third part is of the eighth and the fourth part is the eater. By naming the ninth day, the body of the phantom is formed. Giving the body the tenth day gives the power to walk.
According to the Garuda Purana, after burning the dead body, the body enjoys auspicious fruit in the path of Yamalok. On the first day, the idol of the Pindand (head), the neck and shoulders on the second day, the heart from the third day, the body of the fourth day, the navel from the fifth day, the waist and lower part of the sixth and the seventh day, feet from the eighth day, the ninth and Hunger and thirst are produced from the tenth day. By holding this body body, food is eaten by hunger and thirst for eleventh and twelfth day.
On the thirteenth day, the phantom is caught like a monkey by the angels.
